Cookbook Signings :: Day 5

With just a days rest the team headed out to the Houston Nutcracker, a retail show where we set up a booth and sell our products to lots and lots of retail customers. It is a fundraiser for the Houston Ballet and all ticket proceeds from the Market benefit the Houston Ballet Foundation, Houston Ballet Academy and its scholarship funds. We are nestled in among hundreds of other vendors {323 to be exact} selling everything from gourmet food, clothing, jewelry, home decor, Christmas decorations and everything else you can think of.  It is a very, very busy show with over 100,000 people attending and I just love it! It is a wonderful way for me to see how our customers choose our products, what they select and I even get to hear their suggestions. The booth is fairly small which forces us to concentrate on selling our Personalizable Glass Ornaments, our Happy Everything line and of course, our new Happy Everything Cookbook!

{Please excuse the iphone pictures, that’s all we had time for! }

My sister Marcie and my Mom set off pulling a trailer packed full for the long drive west across I-10 to Houston, a mere 12 hours! I flew in the following morning followed by the rest of our team: Kristin, Coton Colors’ National Sales Director, Jenny Lynn, our dynamo sales rep from Mississippi and Kyle, my daughter and a talented Coton Colors Artist. We were ready to personalize, personalize, personalize!

We were fortnuate this year to connect with Sommer Shelfer Blackburn.  Sommer is a Tallahasse girl who married and settled down in Houston with her husband and two precious children.   She graciously signed up to help us during this fun {but exhausting} event and brought some great friends with her who helped sell, wrap up packages and check customers out. Believe me, we needed all that help and more!  These girls were wonderful, jumping right into the madness of selling to a booth packed with people. Sommer is also an entrepreuneur, starting a delightful children’s clothing line called Beanies. It is such a cute, well done line.  She has a great website too: http://www.beaniesclothing.com. Check it out!  I just wish my girls were still young enough to wear her adorable designs. {Perhaps my grandkids can wear them someday… }During the show, Marcie is ‘chief personalizer’, beautifully writing names and dates on many thousands of ornaments.  It is a tough job, being able to concentrate on the different spellings and specifics of the orders while being jostled by shoppers.  Kyle really stepped in this year as an ‘assistant personalizer’, giving Marcie some much needed relief.  Kyle has heard about the excitement and madness of this market for many years but she was still surprised by the craziness during her first visit!  Mom, of course, was busy selling, selling, selling.  We are all constantly amazed by her energy which kept up great this year.  Go Mom!

My job was to show off The Happy Everything Cookbook as well as introduce people to the complete Happy Everything line. It was a pleasure meeting so many different people, talking about cooking and entertaining, swapping recipes and signing cookbooks! Susie cooked up the delicious Cipotle Pecans for customers to taste and the recipe received RAVE reviews. I highly recommend to you… offer them up this Thanksgiving to your guests!  They are easy to make and are the perfect snack. Rosemary and chipotle are the unexpected flavors that make these pecans so different.  I assure you they will be a big hit! Click here to order your cookbook and find the pecan recipe on page 110.
We’ve attending this show for many years {not one of us can remember how many} and it is great to meet back up with customers who have purchased Coton Colors’ ornaments each year for their growing families. It is a busy {and hard on the body} show to work, but I always, always mange to somehow leave energized.  Thanks Houston for your friendly welcome. We look forward to coming back next year.  {…after we get a bit of rest, that is! }

A Note from The Curious Cook…

‘Tis the season for Chipotle Pecans… and I am not talking Christmas! Pecans are in high season right now and people are “nuts” for these savory {not too sweet} pecans. Our Chipolte Pecans recipe can be found in the ‘Chili Cook-off on the Farm’ chapter of The Happy Everything Cookbook on page 110.

The pine-like essence of the rosemary, the warm smokey flavors of the chipolte chili powder and the slight sweetness given from the maple syrup and orange juice makes these pecans irresistible! Make these for your Fall festivities and remember they look great served in a Coton Colors leaf bowl – it is perfect to pair with pecans.

I really want all of you to have the leaf bowl in your collection this fall. Soo… I convinced Laura to give one away with every $75 purchase on the web!! Just enter coupon code LEAF when you checkout from now until Sunday!

When determining what events we wanted to include in the book, I knew we had to have a birthday party. Birthday’s have always been special at my house and have inspired many Coton Colors products over the years. The Summer Birthday Barbeque section is one of my favorites in the cookbook, full of classic recipes that have been revisited for a new twist on the traditional.

Look what’s Cooking!

I can’t begin to tell you how excited I am to make a BIG announcement from Coton Colors…
The Coton Colors Crew and I have been working so hard on a huge project for over a year now and today I can finally share it with you all… so without further adieu, The Happy Everything Cookbook is NOW available for pre-order!
Why a cookbook, you ask?  Many of you know that I have always loved celebrating, from the predictable, familiar family birthdays to the spontaneity of last minute, impromptu gatherings. Through Coton Colors, I’ve had the distinct joy of growing a business marrying my passions of handcrafted artistry with inspiration for celebratory moments. We joyously create hand-painted pottery designed to exemplify chic sophistication, with a touch of fun… exuding the creativity with which I live my own life.
The Happy Everything platter is my favorite creation, and the collection grew out of my innate desire to attach a little bit of “happy” to everything. To me, living life in style means finding smiles in the most ordinary of moments. After years of considering capturing these concepts in a cookbook, I finally gathered the most important ingredient necessary – my talented friend, Susan “Susie” Murray – to share her recipes and her seasoned entertaining philosophies. An invite to Susie’s home for dinner is a true treasure… I never pass up the opportunity to experience her delicious and detailed menus.
Like many others, young married life and early parenthood found both Susie and I making the mistake of working entirely too hard to impress. We were chronic over-achievers and the desire to have everything “done right” was paralyzing at times. Were our homes perfectly presentable? Were the flowers precisely placed? Was the food hot and ready as guests arrived? And moreover, was it delicious enough to wow? Were our children on their best behavior {or could we quickly get them fed and to bed}? Fortunately, it didn’t take us long to realize… the simple act of hosting friends and family at your table is enough to evoke gratitude from all present. When you look back on your life one day, all that matters is that you enjoyed every day, whether your home was perfect or not!
Years of experience have shaped Susie and I into comfortable entertainers, and “The Happy Everything Cookbook” offers recipes and menus to relish with friends and family, sans the stress and stuffiness. Entertaining – and really life itself – doesn’t have to be about over-achieving. The sections the cookbook are centered around some of our most favorite, happy gatherings.  Susie has developed cohesive menus that are complimentary when prepared together, however, we hope you’ll be curious and enjoy the individual recipes along with your family favorites as well. The fabulous food, tips and tidbits sprinkled throughout “The Happy Everything Cookbook” are designed to infuse a little “happy” into everything.  But the cookbook is about more than tasty recipes and decorating tips – we hope that it sets the tone to truly celebrate the relationships in your life and inspires you to create memorable events you, your family and friends will enjoy for years to come. Make time to celebrate all of the little things… in our eyes, the little things are the big things, after all.  So here’s to finding a little Happy… in Everything with “The Happy Everything Cookbook”!

I cannot tell a lie…

» Posted In Recipes

George Washington was born on this day, February 22, maaaany years ago in 1732.  His birthday was celebrated yesterday along with Abraham Lincoln’s on the federal holiday known as President’s Day.  In honor of old Georgie Porgie and his cherry tree we wanted to share a yummy recipe for mini cherry pie danish.

As they say, it’s as EASY as pie!

YOU’LL NEED:
Ready made Puff Pastry (1 sheet)
Cherry pie filling (1 large can)
Cream cheese mixture:
Half block of cream cheese (4oz)
1 Tbs sugar
vanilla extract (few drops)
lemon juice (just a splash)
Drizzle icing:
1 cup of powdered sugar
2-3 tsp orange juice or until you get the right consistency

Step 1: Cut one sheet of thawed pastry into 9 squares

Step 2: Soften the cream cheese in the microwave for 10 seconds and mix in the sugar, vanilla, and lemon juice

Step 3: Spread the cream cheese mixture diagonally on each square

Step 4: Add a few cherries to each square on top of the cream cheese

Step 5: Pull the opposite corners up on each square and pinch them together

Step 6: Brush each danish with a bit of egg wash and bake at 400-425 until golden brown {about 15 minutes}

Step 7: Let them cool slightly before drizzling with icing

Step 8: ENJOY!!
