And We’re Off…

» Posted In Happenings, See Us In

Every January we make the trip, first to Atlanta and then to Dallas, to meet with our fantastic retailers and showcase our newest designs! It is so much fun to visit with the amazing, creative, business savvy people who sell Coton Colors products in their stores and boutiques across the country.  I especially love to hear their feedback about our latest line – hearing what they like and what they want to see more of. One of my favorite things about market is creating fun and attention grabbing window displays in our showrooms.  Here are some of the displays from our summer shows last year. Please excuse the glare, they are windows after all…

Cookbook Signings :: Rewind

Forgive me but I caught a cold on the way back from our first leg of the tour and now I am so, so late in catching you up to where all we’ve been…and we’ve been to so many wonderful places!

If I recall correctly…we left off at Moon Mippy San Antonio {mind you BEFORE Thanksgiving…yikes}.  I’ve got lots to show and tell you since then! After a fun visit to San Antonio we headed back to Houston. Gotta say a one day round trip to San Antonio and back makes for a LONG day… but we were looking forward to an early morning signing at Alsplaughs.  Dorothy, the store owner is one of our favorite customers {as she is smart and savvy and knows how to sell} so we could hardly wait to get to her store! We packed up and headed out to her fine shop. We were met by eager staff members and customers that were ready to get going.
Delicious tastings had been prepared for us, of course all from The Happy Everything Cookbook. Dorothy’s store is an extremely successful store and is just packed full of all different types of gift items as well as lots and lots of jewelry. It is truly one stop shopping and Coton Colors is proud we have a place there.
Nutella Poundcake & Ginger Cookies were all festively served to shoppers.  We signed books, personalized ornaments & pottery and had a great time meeting her customers and staff.  Kristin is looking forward to coming back to ladies night where things get a little crazy {or so we hear}. We left in a pouring rain storm to begin our trek to Dallas, a four-ish hour drive.  It started out calmly and cooly with Kristin driving.  That soon ended when on a call from Marcie {my sister}, she overheard that Kristin was our driver.  She quickly said to me over the phone, “Just fake like you have to go to the bathroom and then you drive!”  {Apparently, after many experiences with Kristins driving Marcie doesn’t have a lot of confidence in her abilities!}  Oops… Marcie was talking a little too loudly as Kristin heard her loud and clear.  Really, how could Kristin be offended when in the first five minutes of the drive she told the story of recently running a car off the interstate! Needless to say, I took over the wheel and we headed off to dinner…
We hit Dallas just in time for the sunset {out the left driver window…yes, everything IS bigger in Texas}.  Dallas is one of my very favorite cities and we had a hard time deciding on which of our restaurant favorites we wanted to head to for dinner. Mexican at Mia’s was the decision and off we went for delicious margaritas and the house specialty, queso with chorizo fixed table side. The serve it to you wrapped up in a tortilla…Yum! Gotta say, we just love margaritas and tortillas.
We awoke to a calm day of signing cookbooks at another fabulous store… Jackson’s Home & Garden Center.

We were met by our new sales rep Kevin Turner who is just a delight to be with. He graciously cooked up Ginger Cookies and Chipotle Pecans. He is a fabulous cook, a wonderful entertainer and is so great at showing people the virtues of our cookbook!

This store really got us in the Christmas spirit as it was decked out with everything Christmas.  Tons and tons and tons of ornaments {and lots of Coton Colors ornaments I am happy to say} were setup in the main room but this business is so much more than Christmas…
They are TOP notch with full selections of all types of things garden and home.  All are perfectly displayed and easily shopped. Much inspiration can be found here and they certainly have the selection you need to make shopping easy.  We met the store owner, Mr. Jackson and enjoyed swapping fun stories of importing from far off lands.   The store buyer, Leslie, is also a true delight and is extremely talented in running a beautiful store. Dallas is lucky to have this gem of a resource in which to shop.
After our signing we enjoyed shopping a bit before meeting up with friends for an early dinner. We sadly said goodbye to Susie who flew home that evening. She was to miss out on a fabulous meal at a little gem of a restaurant, Neighborhood Services, where we were joined by one of mine and Kristin’s favorite people in the world, Ed Greer and his fabulous mother-in-law.
Ed is a resource for all things cool and fabulous. He is too, too funny to be around so we are always in for treat when we are graced by his company. What entertainment we were in store for!!
Ed Greer is the BEST gift giver. He is incredibly generous AND has great taste… what more can you ask for?  He surprised me with a belated birthday gift from my very most favorite line of all time, Match.  It was a beautiful tray with wooden cheese board {it sits right now on my bar and I pass by it every day and think of Ed…thanks Ed!}. We ended our trip to Dallas with a day of signing cookbooks and personalizing ornaments alongside The Store at Lake Highlands at the Chi Omega Christmas Market, a fun shopping event held annually. We met lots of people and personalized lots and lots of ornaments.  Cheryl {the owner of The Store at Lake Highlands} was a great host, and it was such a wonderful way to end the tour!
Little did I know, even more excitement awaited me… as I was waiting to catch our flight home I read the play by play texts from my friend and fellow volleyball mom, Lynn.  Our Leon High School team {for which my daughter, Mary Parker, plays} was in the final four tournament for the state title.   We anxiously waited to see if I needed to divert my travel plans to Orlando where the state championship was to be played the next night.  {See this photo of a very patient Kristin waiting to hear the news…}
Well… they won!!!   Off to Orlando I went to join the team just in time to watch them win state in the girls 6A volleyball finals for the state of Florida.  The first EVER win for Leon High School {which says an awful lot as Leon is the oldest high school in the state}.  I couldn’t be more proud as this dedicated team worked so hard all year to gain the title.  Go Lions!  And YAY Mary Parker!  What fun.
With a relaxing week of Thanksgiving with great family and great food ahead, I could hardly wait to share all of the stories of the many fun times we enjoyed on our first ever cookbook tour. I am so very thankful this year especially as I reflect on all the many, many blessings that this cookbook has brought to me and Coton Colors.   The joy of working in a new medium has energized me, the fun of working with such a talented group of people I am so lucky to have in my life, and the many creative and diverse businesses that showcase and share our products all over the country. Thank you from the very bottom of my heart for supporting me throughout this journey.  It is a true joy. Up next… a few more signings and then CHRISTMAS!!!!

Cookbook Signings :: Moon over Arkansas

Kristin and I headed to Little Rock, Arkansas for the last round of cookbook signings for 2011. It is bittersweet as I have really enjoyed traveling to these many different cities, seeing the unique style of each store and meeting and getting to know each store owner and staff in a different way rather than just during market. This trip should be the easiest yet as we will land in one hotel for the entire three days and travel short distances.  {A real bonus as Kristin and I don’t always travel lightly!}  I am also looking forward to getting home and staying put so I can get the rest of my Christmas decorations out!
We landed and low and behold what should greet us but SNOW!  Quite a different site especially since I left the humid 80 degree Florida air just a few hours before.
Our first stop….Cherry’s Hallmark. A delightful store owned by Tim, the son of original owner, Virginia Thompson.  Virginia greeted us with three recipes from our cookbook: Chipotle Pecans, Pumpkin Seed Cornbread and Apple Cake with Caramel Icing {which were all delicious}.  It was so great to listen to her conversations with customers as she offered up the selections of food.  She was obviously an experienced cook as she really highlighted the different features of each recipe   Susie would have LOVED to have been here.  Tim graciously made the Vegetarian Chili which hit the spot on this cold day. Early to bed {really!} gave us a lot of rest for Thursday’s second day of signings.  First up…The Crown Shop.
Another delightful store filled with many unique products, lots of customers and a really busy staff.  Owners Mary Jim and John Ramsey greeted us, alongside their son Hall and daughter in law Wendy {and I can’t forget their two adorable, fluffy Wheaton Terriors; Masi and Bell}.  It is a true family business!!
They have built quite a successful store where they have expanded on down the shopping center offering just about every type of gift product imaginable. We were humbled to learn that many of their customers are huge Coton Colors fans and have collected most everything in our line. This customer went home with 2 cookie jars, 2 cookbooks, lots of attachments and a bag full of ornaments – wow!!
Another fun signing I had was to a woman who was hosting Christmas bunco at her house.  I personalized each book with congratulations to…  followed by: most wins, least wins, etc. {Don’t you just love a game where you win even if you lose??} It makes me happy to think about this group of ladies who have been playing bunco together for over 15 years being presented with their winning gifts… our cookbook!!
We had so much fun greeting customers, signing cookbooks and personalizing Razorback ornaments. Rushing next to our second signing at a great boutique… Full Moon, which was set in a great area of Little Rock called The Heights.
A great staff was found here along with a really sweet owner, Linda.  This is a new store for us who we have had a great time working with and getting to know this year.
We enjoyed Linda’s offering of Onion, Thyme & Goat Cheese Tarts, Buttery Pound Cake with Nutella Swirl and Pumpkin Seed Cornbread.   I loved looking around her store and seeing many different types of happy products. I also enjoyed a visit by Jill who was a friend and sister-in-law of one of our cookbook stars {see Vickie on page 206 of the Cinco de Mayo section}.
It was fun swapping stories about Vickie’s children Miles and Sarah Nole and husband Sam who is absolutely the funniest person you’ll ever meet.  {Not sure Vicki agrees but he is!} We also met another very sweet customer with the same name as me….Laura, who was most complimentary and very kind. I really like Little Rock people!!
We were just about done when a customer rushed in {a sweet woman named Cindy Burns} saying, “Did I miss the cookbook….did I miss the cookbook??”   What fun she was and a true delight in her enthusiasm to get her signed cookbook.
As we left Full Moon and traveled on our way to dinner we were greeted with another Full Moon!  Kinda funny, don’t you think? See at our next stop… June’s Hallmark!!

Cookbook Signings :: Tiger Habitat

I didn’t mention the field trip that Kristin, Kyle and I took right smack dab in the middle of the crazy Nutcracker show. In July we were invited to come for a book signing with our NUMBER ONE customer in LSU licensed products, the LSU Sport Shop.

Ashley Stringfellow, the store buyer and manager, sure knows her LSU stuff. She sells all of our collegiate products that we design specifically for LSU fans. Take a peek at them here! She invited us to come sign cookbooks during their homecoming weekend. Picture this… her store is located on the LSU campus directly across from Tiger Stadium, right next door to Mike the Tiger’s multi million dollar ‘habitat’. Our obvious answer… YES!
At that time we had no idea that LSU would be the number ONE team in the nation. Having come off of their amazing defeat of Alabama you cannot imagine the excitement we found once on campus. We were greeted by Ashley who met us on a motorized gator at parking lot W. {Thanks for the convenient parking pass Ashley!}
She drove us to the famed Tiger stadium. Along the way we passed the amazing, amazing, amazing spectacle of Tiger Tailgating.  Believe me…they do it up BIG here!
We were treated to a tour of the LSU hall of fame room where we saw trophy after trophy.  Then we walked through their NFL room where we saw every past team player next to the pro Helmets where they are playing in their professional careers! Kristin was in her glory as she read the names and commented on their positions and current standings. As big of a Tennessee fan as she is, this almost converted her to a Tiger fan!
It was so great to be here knowing that Big Milt {my husband Milton’s father} was an LSU grad, living in the dorms set right in Tiger Stadium.  I loved showing off our Cajun Sunday Supper chapter which showcases my mother-in-law, Mere, and her stories of growing up in New Orleans and Lafayette. Even these Cajuns who are fabulous cooks were excited to try Mere’s family recipe of Seafood Gumbo.  {You’ll find the recipe on page 182 of The Happy Everything Cookbook!}
We signed cookbooks, swapped cooking tales and joined the crowds and crowds of people who line the street just ouside the shop to cheer on the team and band who walk to the stadium between screaming lines of fans.  I have never in my life seen so much purple and gold!  Incredible fan support!!
I also really enjoyed walking through the food tents where I saw giant black cauldrons set over flames full of hot red beans and rice and steaming jambalaya. The menu was definitely NOT comprised of the normal stadium offerings of hotdogs and popcorn, rather Alligator balls and Boudin sausage. YUM! After the parade, Ashley took us to the stadium for game time where we met her husband Greg on the sidelines. Greg is equipment manager for the LSU football team – Wow! We also met her darling daughters, Sara &  Lily who were so cute, reminding me of my daughters at that age with their matching outfits… purple striped shirts, “skinnies” and tiny cowboy boots. So, so cute!
Tiger stadium is just incredible.  I am so happy to have had the chance to be there and also so happy to have Milton join us.  After all this book tour traveling I really miss him!  {I have to tell you, as soon as he heard about the LSU signing he booked his ticket.  He wasn’t going to miss Tiger stadium.}. Also, I was so glad we had Kyle join us as chief personalizer for LSU ornaments.  I loved having them both with me {and Kristin too}!
We ended the night at a wonderful chop house in downtown Baton Rouge, adjoining the Mississippi river. We enjoyed a delicious meal and then on to bed as another early wake up call was ahead of us. You just never know where the road will take you!
Never had I imagined us on this journey through the south.  I have enjoyed ever single minute of it and cannot wait to wake up tomorrow with more adventures to be had.   Next stop, back to Houston to finish up the Nutcracker and then on to a few Texas towns…
Can’t wait!!
